PRESS: News Channel 8 “Why breathing properly really matters”

SOUTH TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Breathing is something we do all day every day. But do you ever think about how you’re breathing?
Beth Hardin is a certified breathwork instructor and she says breathing has a bigger impact than you might think.
“It’s controlling so many places inside us we don’t even realize.”
Hardin holds weekly breathing workshops at Body and Mind Massage in South Tampa. Breathwork is growing in popularity as part of the movement toward mindfulness.
“It’s really about the conscious breath. just taking a conscious inhale and a conscious exhale,” says Hardin.
Hardin explains that breathwork is physical, mental, spiritual and emotional. “People want to feel better without substances. It’s natural. You don’t have to go buy anything for it. It’s available 24-7.”
But, you do need to know how to do it correctly. Hardin says “It’s a 2-part breath and the first part is in the belly. The second one is in the high chest out the throat and we’re going to use the mouth on this one, which not a lot of breathing techniques use the mouth, but this one we do because it adds more oxygen in the brain.”
Breathwork is designed to center you, calm you and clear your mind. “It’s kind of like hitting a reset button,” says Hardin. You don’t have to have a specific place, the right table or even a blanket.
“Breath work is available to you any time and any place.”
